What Does an On-Call or Vacation Nanny Do?
The primary responsibility of an on-call or vacation nanny is the comprehensive care of our client's children. No other duty, request, or responsibility should take precedence.
Typical duties of a vacation nanny include, but are not limited to:
Attending to each child's individual needs
Diapering as needed
Engaging in arts and crafts
Reading stories
Supervising pool swimming (no beach swimming, unless specifically requested by the client and approved by both the agency and the nanny)
Taking walks on the beach, building sandcastles, hunting for shells, nature hunts, and other outdoor activities
Bike riding
Participating in resort activities for the kids
Watching movies at night
When the children go to bed, the nanny may read, browse Facebook on their phones, play games on their personal iPads, etc.
How Much Will I Get Paid as an On-Call or Vacation Nanny?
Nannies working as on-call or vacation nannies can earn between $23 per hour to $55+ per hour, depending on the specifics of the appointment. Additionally, clients often tip for exemplary service.
What Is a Permanent Nanny and What Are the Responsibilities?
A permanent nanny is a childcare provider placed with a family on either a part-time or full-time basis. The work agreement usually requires a year-long commitment and is often extended if both parties agree.
The primary responsibility of a permanent nanny is the complete care of the employer's children. No other duty, request, or responsibility should take precedence.
Typical duties of a nanny include, but are not limited to:
Tending to each child's basic physical needs
Simple meal planning and preparation
Laundry and clothing care for children*
Organizing play activities and outings
Organizing educational activities and projects
Reading
Facilitating social activities (birthday parties, playgroups)
Tidying up at the end of the appointment
Some permanent nannies are also willing to take on extra responsibilities around the house. These might include:
Parent's laundry*
Shopping and errands*
Loading/unloading the dishwasher*
Taking out the trash*
*Note: A nanny's responsibilities are unique and should be negotiated prior to placement when entering a permanent employment position.
What Do Permanently Placed Nannies Typically Make?
The following rates reflect the current market for long-term nanny positions in this area. Please note that these rates are subject to change due to shifting demand.
Full-Time Nannies:
1 Year of Experience: $18-22/hour
2-5 Years of Experience: $23-25/hour
5-10+ Years of Experience: $25-35+/hour
Part-Time Nannies:
$2-$5 more per hour than full-time rates
Additional Information:
These rates are based on care for 1-2 children. For additional children, expect to add $2-$4 per hour.
For "Nanny Share" arrangements (where families combine to share the cost of a nanny), add $8-$10 per hour to the above rates.
Nanny/Household Manager/Family Assistant:
1 Year of Experience: $25/hour
2-5 Years of Experience: $26-34/hour
5-10+ Years of Experience: $35-85/hour (dependent on responsibilities)
Newborn Care Providers:
$35-95 per hour, plus travel costs, room, and board
What Hours Do Nannies Typically Work?
The hours a nanny works depend on the type of position being sought.
On-Call Nannies & Sitters:
These positions offer very flexible schedules, ideal for college students, mothers, or those looking for a side job.
You choose the jobs you want and set your own schedule.
Permanent Nannies:
The hours depend on the needs of the family.
Typically, permanent nannies work Monday through Friday.
While each work agreement is unique, most permanent full-time nannies work 40-60 hours per week and part-time nannies work 20-30 hours per week.
Our on-call and vacation nannies are scheduled according to the nanny's preferences and availability. You set you own schedule!
Requirements for All Applicants:
You must genuinely love children and enjoy spending time with them.
You must be able to speak fluent English and be legally employable in the United States.
You must have a working smartphone and a working email address that you check frequently.
You must have a good driving record and a dependable vehicle.
You must be able to pass an intensive background check and screening process. The background check is run by a professional background check company. Hilton Head Nannies is not able to work with individuals who have criminal convictions in their backgrounds - no exceptions.
We require a minimum of 9 references - no exceptions. If you cannot provide 9 references, Hilton Head Nannies will not be able to represent you to our clients. References may not be related to you in any way. We are expecting to fantastic feedback about you in order to represent you.
All nannies must take a skills assessment and have a high score.
You must be Infant/Child/Adult CPR Certified and Basic First Aid Certified, or have a willingness to become so.
You must provide the required documentation proving your identity.
We are looking for nannies who have a genuine interest in the well-being of children, are child advocates and have an understanding of child safety.

We are looking for individuals who are energetic, positive, agreeable, motivated/self-starters, and who have the ability to accept and follow advance directives.
You must be a very prompt and dependable person. If you are someone who is late or calls out of shifts often, we are not for you.
We are looking for individuals who communicate well, are customer service driven, have the gift of Southern hospitality, and are not afraid of hard work.
You must believe in engaging and playing with the children in your care. Age appropriate activities, books, arts and crafts, toys and games are all a vital part of the service you will provide. TV and screen time are limited to only being used when the parents instruct you to do so.
We are, first and foremost, child advocates. We believe in using today's technology to set caregivers and children up for successful relationships that protect children. Hilton Head Nannies uses technology to evaluate the nannies we place - on rotation - via audio and video recording devices with our client's permission. Our nannies never know when it will be their turn to be evaluated. All of our nannies must agree to these evaluations by the agency and/or the clients at any given time with or without advance knowledge. The use of this technology protects children and also validates the excellent job that you are doing for our clients!

Can I Bring My Child with Me to a Nanny Job?
Our policy is that we do not work with nannies who need to bring their own children to work each day. Our clients are paying for individualized attention for their children, and we require that nannies treat this as a professional position. In return, you will be provided with the courtesy, respect, and compensation befitting a professional childcare provider.
CPR and First Aid Certification Requirements
We require all nannies to be certified in Infant/Child/Adult CPR and First Aid. These certifications must be obtained through in-person classes.
